What types of wildlife are there in North Carolina?

Mainly near Hiddenite? What types of wildlife are there in North Carolina?
Go to eNature.com, which is run by the National Wildlife Federation, and enter the zip code for the area you are interested in. It will generate a list of the birds and animals that live in that area.

Volunteering at a wildlife center- it says I need 2 references?

What would be some good references that I could get that would help me get the ';junior wildlife keeper'; position? Would it be like volunteering at an animal shelter? I'm only 13, by the way and applications are due by May 3rd, so I have quite an amount of time.

Thanks for helping :)Volunteering at a wildlife center- it says I need 2 references?
Yes, I would think any prior experience you would have, or can acquire, working with animals would be good. Are they asking specifically for references from past volunteer experience or just for general character references?

Why does wildlife need protecting?

im doing a geography project on protecting wildlife. How to protect it. Why it needs protecting and what charities do protect it. Thanks for your answers it would be great for websites to thanks. Why does wildlife need protecting?
Why does wildlife need protecting? It must be protected or it will be hunted to extinction. Or pollution will kill it off.Why does wildlife need protecting?
Wow you are doing a great project. And the topic is a very noble one that of protecting wildlife!!

Wildlife includes all non-domesticated plants, animals, and other organisms. Domesticating wild plant and animal species for human benefit has occurred many times all over the planet, and has a major impact on the environment, both positive and negative.

Wildlife can be found in all ecosystems, Deserts, rain forests, plains, and other areas鈥攊ncluding the most developed urban sites鈥攁ll have distinct forms of wildlife. While the term in popular culture usually refers to animals that are untouched by human factors, most scientists agree that wildlife around the world is impacted by human activities.

Humans have historically tended to separate civilization from wildlife in a number of ways including the legal, social, and moral sense. This has been a reason for debate throughout recorded history. Religions have often declared certain animals to be sacred, and in modern times concern for the natural environment has provoked activists to protest the exploitation of wildlife for human benefit or entertainment. There is another term that of wildlife management that is closely related with protection of wildlife....Wildlife management is a general term for the process of keeping wild species at desirable levels which are determined by the wildlife managers. Wildlife management can include game keeping, wildlife conservation and pest control.

Wildlife management has become an integrated science using disciplines such as mathematics, chemistry, biology, ecology, climatology and geography to gain the best results.

Wildlife conservation aims to halt the loss in the earths biodiversity by taking into consideration ecological principles such as carrying capacity, disturbance and succession and environmental conditions such as physical geography, pedology and hydrology with the aim of balancing the needs of wildlife with the needs of people. Most wildlife is concerned with the preservation and improvement of habitats though increasingly reinstatement is being used. Techniques can include reforestation, pest control, nitrification and denitrification, irrigation, coppicing and hedge laying.

Game keeping is the management or control of wildlife for the wellbeing of game birds may include killing other animals which share the same niche or predators to maintain a high population of the more profitable species, such as pheasants introduced into woodland.

Pest control is the control of real or perceived pests and can be for the benefit of wildlife, farmers, game keepers or safety reasons.

In the United States, wildlife management practices are often implemented by a governmental agency to uphold a law, such as the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Many wildlife managers are employed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and by state governments.

In the United Kingdom, wildlife management undertaken by several organizations including government bodies such as the Forestry Commission, Charities such as the RSPB and The Wildlife Trusts and privately hired gamekeepers and contractors. Legislation has also been passed to protect wildlife such as the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. The UK government also give farmers subsidies through the Countryside Stewardship Scheme to improve the conservation value of there farms.

Hope these facts are useful.ALL THE BEST!!!
The most practical reason is that all living things, from grass, to pikas, to humans, are connected. Removing one species from the food web can mess up the delicate balance. For instance, Einstein is thought to have said that if bees went extinct, humans would follow four years later.

From an evolutionary perspective, each species has taken thousands or even millions of years to become what it is now. Yet we manage to wipe out all those years of adaptation in such a short time.

Or one could say that every animal was specifically created by God, and is therefore worthy of our protection.

Then of course, many people appreciate wildlife for aesthetic reasons, and simply do not want to see beautiful creatures disappear.

Some groups that advocate protecting wildlife are World Wildlife Fund, National Audubon Society, Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund, and National Wildlife Federation. And there are many others.
Wildlife, in my opinion, needs to be protected but controlled as well. The ecosystem in every place makes life possible. Scientists have studied the chain of events which directly or indirectly affects our survival as well. My answer is an attempt to emphasize the importance of wildlife instead of narrowing down to pure entertainment. I am not fond of the skunks walking around in flocks. I have no idea how they benefit the ecosystem but I assume they play a role in it. If only we could control their reproduction so there were enough but not too many.....
the need to save the wildlife are that they are also as important as the trees. to save the wildlife we should build more wildlife sanctuaries, zoos, national parks etc........and not only wild animals if we even see a dog near our houses that is the street dog in any kind of problem we should do our part of helping it if it is in our hands.........GOOD LUCK FOR YOUR PROJECT DUDE!!!!!!!

AISHWARYA..............
Wildlife is protected by a selfless, group of people that want to save the wildlife so one day others will be able to enjoy it. It dosn't need to be protected but people want to.
Because many people have nothing better to do, and some get paid large salaries to act like they are protecting it.

Why Do Wildlife Rescue Centres Need To Have A Clear Code Of Ethics Policy?

dude don't you reckon you placed this question in the wrong area?

all the same, i think its because cruelty can be perceived in so many ways that they want to avoid confusion. kinda like child abuse laws. in my ******* country a mere smack on the butt is a form of child abuse. so to make the do's and don't official, they make policies. So there is no mincing of words.

Hope that answered you're question

conservation of nature includes conservation of wildlife also dear...we have to focus mainly on this point bcoz animal species n plants r interdependent...eg: clavarias major ,a tree on the island of mauritious ,at present became endangered only bcoz of excessive hunting of dodo birds [species interdependence]

(as in high acidity, salt or ph levels etc?
Another common hazard from human activity is run off containing fertilizer and sewage. Both of these are great for algea and plant growth but, unfortuantely, the algea grow so rapidly that they consume all the oxygen that is dissolved in the water. That means there is no oxygen for fish to ';breathe'; when they swim thru the water and they die. In addition, the lack of oxygen allows anaerobic bacteria to thrive and they cause other problems. Research ';fish kills'; and you'll probably find reports of this from all over the world.

    * Hunters How can Property Owners Post Their Land Against Hunting Wildlife When Nobody Owns Wildlife Anyway?

If the Wildlife is not Legally Owned by Anyone How can you be Prevented from Hunting it because someone puts up Signs saying you Cannot Hunt Wildlife if they have No Legal Authority or Grounds to Claim the Wildlife on Their Property?* Just because the Wildlife is on Their Property doesn't mean they can Prevent it from being Hunted if They Don't Own it in the First Place.* I didn't think Anyone Owned the Wildlife.** Hunters How can Property Owners Post Their Land Against Hunting Wildlife When Nobody Owns Wildlife Anyway?
They do own the land. If they don't want you hunting on their land, they do not have to let you on their property. If you do go on their property you can be arrested for trespassing.

The land owner does not own the animals. If the animals go off of their property, you may hunt them, but not on somebody else's property.* Hunters How can Property Owners Post Their Land Against Hunting Wildlife When Nobody Owns Wildlife Anyway?
Let's say I want to go hunting squirrels. I think I want to do this in your yard and will be reasonable. A .410 is more than enough weapon for them. So what if you were trying to sleep and had no idea I was there until the gun went off under your window?

Neither you nor the landowner own the wildlife you want to hunt, but he does own the land it is on acquires given certain rights with ownership. If you do not have his permission to be on his property, you are trespassing. If you happen to be carrying a weapon at the time, you are committing armed trespass. The landowner can not stop you from hunting. He does have the right to keep you from hunting on land he controls. Renters and lessors also acquire some of these same rights.
Simple. Trespassing on private property for whatever reason is illegal. If the landowner does not allow access, for whatever reason, no one has the right to trespass.

It is perfectly legal to post your property and while not specifically mentioned in the Constitution, the right to protect one's property against trespass has roots in English Civil Law, Common Law, and US Case Law. Also, the Tenth Amendment grants powers to the states to make laws not reserved to Congress. Thus the states can make whatever laws they choose to in regards to private property.
They don't have signs saying ';you may not hunt animals that have previously stepped on this property'; they ahve signs that say ';no trepassing or hunting' meaning don't come on my property an hunt. Simple as that. It has to do with the trespassing if you own the property next to theres you can be .432424234234 inches from there property line and shoot a deer that just stepped over the property line. As long as you or the animal are not on there property your all good.

    screw PETA they are dumb
They can't prevent you from hunting the wildlife that lives on or crosses their land so long as you do not trespass on their land to harvest it. If that same game is found on your land or on land upon which you have permission to hunt, it is yours for the taking, within the law, of course. What the land owner has the right to do as the owner of the land is to grant or deny you access to his land. The wildlife belongs to the citizens of the state but the land and all the rights pertaining to it belong to the land owner.
Because I own the land and I own guns that I will use to keep trespassers off of my land. Since you are not supposed to be on my land to start with, you have no way of knowing whether an animal you are hunting is on my land or not and I won't let you come here to find out.

Seems you have a lot in common with your socialist Lord Obama. By asking this question you are telling us you have no respect for the property of others or for the people themselves.

Just remember that some of us property owners hunt on our land and might be sitting there in full camo when you decide to trespass. You won't see me until it's too late to run away, and then the judge will tell you about my property rights.
You need to get a lawyer to explain this to you.

Paying taxes and holding a deed gives you the right to control access to the land. Hunting rights goes along with land ownership.

    Dave

PS one more thing I just thought of. Been at work tonight wandering if your question is bs trolling or if you are legit. I thought of a good way to say this so maybe you could understand where the land owner is comeing from. A meteor fly'n through the night sky is not mine or yours. So, by your logic next time there is a big meteor shower and a bunch of folks think your roof top would be a good place to watch it, they could just camp on your roof all night. Hope this helps you understand that hunting on private land is a privilage and not a right. Hunting on private land with out permision is trespassing and is illegal.
Can you work the word 'wildlife' in one more time?

By restricting or preventing hunting on my property I am not stopping you from shooting the animals. I am keeping you off my property. As soon as the animals leave my land you can shoot them to your hearts content as long as you get permission from the guy whose land they are then on. Since I DO own the land I get to make decisions about what goes on there. Maybe I want to hunt there and not have you spooking the game. Maybe I don't want to have to dodge your bullets. Maybe I don't want to have to worry about you getting injured on my land or injuring someone else there.

To follow your logic, nobody owns the air we breathe so I should be able to walk into your house any time I want and breathe the air in there. Just because the air is in your home doesn't mean you can prevent me from breathing it. You don't own that air.
gsi joe is completely correct on this. The land is what the owner has control of, not necessarily the critters! Some states have specific laws on their books that regulate this. In the state of arkansas, if you are caught hunting on another persons property without permission, the owner can legally shoot you for trespassing. Be careful and good luck!
No body owns the wild life you are right but the people who put up the no hunting signs want to protect their property not the wild life.. Most dont hunt either.. There are times that I have found out if you go and ask permission to hunt, the will give you permission to hunt... Happy Easter
Its not about owning the wildlife. Its about landowners being able to say you can't hunt on land they own. In effect they're saying if you're on my land you're trespassing and I can and will have you arrested regardless of why you're on my land.
because its there property and they do in fact have the legal right to not let you onto their property. whether it be to hunt or not to hunt.

personally if someone asks permission i'd let them hunt. but i wouldn't want someone just waltzing on like they own the place.
But they do own the land and, as the land owner, they can say what does and does not take place on their land, and who can and cannot come onto their land.

A responsible hunter knows this and respects all ';keep off'; signs.

    .
    private property

    Definition

Tangible and intangible things owned by individuals or firms over which their owners have exclusive and absolute legal rights, such as land, buildings, money, copyrights, patents, etc. Private property can be transferred only with its owner's consent, and by due process such as sale or gift...
It's not about the wildlife. It's about controlling access to the property. Land owners have the right to do that.

I hope, for your sake, you're not asking this because of some impending legal problem.
Maybe not, but if the landowner won't allow you to trespass or to shoot on his property, your point is pretty well moot, isn't it? Both trespassing and especially shooting are well within his rights to control.
well they dont own the wildlife. but they do own the land. so if the animals move to another part where there you can hunt them then their fair game. they just have the land thats all.
It's trespassing. You can't come onto their land. They can tell you that.
Sorry, but that is an idiototic question. sell your computer and buy some common sense with the $$$
    we all own the critters
You should ask this in law and ethics. It's more of a legal question.
Some good answers here that pretty much cover why land owners have the right to keep folks off their property.

And now for some true stories here too...

My extended family (aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, cousins) probably own about 1,500 acres in total of decent hunting land. We/they always let people hunt on the property, because we figured that if we were not using it...perhaps someone else could get some enjoyment from it. BUT, times of changed....

My uncle saw some archery hunters on his farm one day. Never gave it a second thought. That same evening, he saw some lights in a back field of his. Just as a precaution, he called the police to see what was going-on. It turns-out that those same guys that were archery hunting were trying to strip/steal the parts off of a bulldozer that he had parked there. They had it in about a hundred pieces, with anything they could carry, loaded in the back of their pickup truck. The following week, my uncle posted NO HUNTING signs all over his farm.

On a piece of property I own with my siblings, things simply got out of control. First, the county raised the assesment of the property by 200%; meaning, we are now paying 3 times as much in property taxes for a tract of land that is only trees and brush. ATV riders have making trails over parts of the land. Once they make a trail, the rain comes and washes the top soil away, creating ruts...which makes ATVing harder...so they make new trails...until the land is criss-crossed with rutted trails that are void of topsoil and any sort of plant growth.

My one cousin got it right. He says that the only time that people seem to know him is when hunting season comes along and they want to hunt on his land. He too has been hit with higher tax assesments on his two farms.

Ironically, I also hunt on private property that is owned by some individuals. BUT, here's the thing. Every year, regardless if I hunt on their land or not, I always send them a small gift as a token of my appreciation for allowing me to use their land. In fact, I have not hunted that property for 9 years now, but I still mail them a $20 box of candy or some other reasonable gift to keep in good terms. And, two years ago I got a letter from the landowners telling me that they have posted their property as NO HUNTING...except me. They stated that if I wish to hunt there, I am more than welcome to use their property.

The moral of this story is... Politely ask permission to hunt on people's property. When possible, give them some token of appreciation for their hospitality (a pie baked with the berries you picked, or some smoked fish from the pond you fished out of, or some deer steaks, or a simple box of candy or other momento). It's not about the value of the gift. It's all about the fact that you aknowledge that they are the rightful taxpaying owners of the land and they are being gracious in allowing you to use their property to hunt on. End of lesson.

  • Best place in Canada to see wildlife?

My husband and I are traveling to British Columbia and Alberta Canada this summer and would like to go to the best place to view wildlife.Best place in Canada to see wildlife?
I am originally from Alberta and spent many of my childhood summers in both B.C. and Alberta. The obvious choices if you are looking for wildlife would be:

Alberta - Banff National Park, Jasper National Park

B.C. - Okanagan Lake, Schuswap Lake, Whistler, Vancouver Island are all good places.

***But I have to tell you a secret (not anymore now I guess), I presently live in Montana and all the years that I lived in Canada, I haven't seen wildlife like I do down here in Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone would be about a 14-hr. drive from Calgary, Alberta. Lots of bears, elk, buffalo, and other creatures to see here. I think B.C. and Alberta have such big areas for animals to roam you don't see them as often.

How to protect the wildlife animals?

how to protect the wildlife animals? Is it necessary for us?

why animals are important for mankind? How to protect the wildlife animals?
Protecting wild animals is our responsibility to the planet.

As long as people hunt and kill animals for sport, for their hides and skins we will remain a primitive, backward people.

Our best chance of stopping or slowing the extinction of wild animals is developing food supplies and construction materials that do not destroy animals and their habitats. How to protect the wildlife animals?
by not killing them urself and by not allowing to kill others. they are very important for the ecosystem we live in
Best way to protect wildlife is to avoid reproducing. Overpopulation is reducing biodiversity and biodiversity is essential for evolution to work and to ensure that some lifeforms survive even when others don't (during environmental changes). Where a condom.Thank you for not breeding.
coz if some animals die, it would mess up the balance of other animals.. and animals help us too for food, tourism and stuff...

just Imagine if the Marsupials of Australia are all dead? that's not australia at all?

like just imagine if like ALL the mosquitoes die in the world, then the frogs won't have nthing to eat, and it s going to affect everyone...

you can protect animals by properly disposing your waste and recycling..

you know like the 6-pack plastic thing which holds like a 6-pack soda? be sure to cut those because Seals and Sea otters get stuck into it's rings

and like Bears here in Anchorage could like eat the stuff in your trash can and die of like poisoning or somethign, plus theyll damage property, so dispose stuff well

    and care for nature
You can attempt to do all you can to protect wildlife. But it is pretty much a waste of time if they don't have habitat to survive in. You want to do something that will work and protect wildlife you have to somehow protect their habitat. There are several ways: politics, buy land, join a wildlife organization, donate money.

It is simple to say don't kill wild things. However that is not the answer. Leave the wild in the wild.

What careers involve conservation of the coast & it's wildlife?

i am in school pursuing my bachelor's degree in biology and then am thinking about getting a master's in marine biology. Unfortunately, I don't want to do the whole traveling, writing research papers, and being gone for long periods of time like most marine biologists do. The career I would like to have is working for an organization that deals with the conservation of a specific stretch of coastline and it's animal inhabitants. Any suggestions on how to reach that goal? What careers involve conservation of the coast %26amp; it's wildlife?
That sounds like a great idea :) Maybe you could look into working with nature centers in the area you want to work in. That would give you a stable location to work, rather than moving around. Those kinds of jobs involve you with the community, and allow you to teach the public about what kinds of organisms live in the area.

You could also become employed with organizations, such as the DEC, and work on specific research projects.

P.S- My college, SUNY ESF, has a Conservation Biology program, maybe you should look into it :)What careers involve conservation of the coast %26amp; it's wildlife?
You could be a park ranger.

For water wildlife, what are some hazards in the water, chemically? (as in high acidity, salt or ph levels etc?

im doing a geography assignemnt and trying to find out some impacts of housing development on natural ecosystems, and im trying to find possible problems with water health that could affect the wildlife. eek!For water wildlife, what are some hazards in the water, chemically? (as in high acidity, salt or ph levels etc?
Another common hazard from human activity is run off containing fertilizer and sewage. Both of these are great for algea and plant growth but, unfortuantely, the algea grow so rapidly that they consume all the oxygen that is dissolved in the water. That means there is no oxygen for fish to ';breathe'; when they swim thru the water and they die. In addition, the lack of oxygen allows anaerobic bacteria to thrive and they cause other problems. Research ';fish kills'; and you'll probably find reports of this from all over the world.

  • Last night was battle of the wildlife on my patio. Anyone know of homemade recipes for removing skunk odor?

no recipe needed. just use tomato juice (not sauce). for some reason, it neutralizes the odor on just about everything. it took the odor out of my clothes and my skin too.Last night was battle of the wildlife on my patio. Anyone know of homemade recipes for removing skunk odor?
i was always told to use tomatoe juice. (sp?)Last night was battle of the wildlife on my patio. Anyone know of homemade recipes for removing skunk odor?
The Myth Busters swear by tomato juice. But you can also buy commercial skunk oder removers.
    I have heard tomato juice.
I have heard of fresh tomatoes or tomato juice- good luck maybe you want to pressure wash with something like vinegar and water
I was told hydrogen peroxide by my vet. I ended up purchasing skunk be gone. It did the job and never had recurring problems even after deck was wet like other things I had tried. Best of luck been there done that!!
The only thing I found is how to get the skunk odor off a dog. I can give you the ingredients for that and maybe you could clean the patio with the solution:

    1/2 cup white vinegar

    1/4 cup baking soda

1 tsp. liquid soap in 1 qt.(1liter) 3% Hydrogen Peroxide

Wash thoroughly: (This is talking about the dog)

Rinse Well. Repeat procedure using 1 part Vinegar to 2 parts water.

I hope this helps. Good Luck!

How long do you think it would take for weeds, plants and wildlife to take over london if the human race?

dissapeared tomorrow? How long do you think it would take for weeds, plants and wildlife to take over london if the human race?
This is a good question. It was only the other day I was having this very conversation whilst travelling up the motorway with our band.

It wouldn't take long. Look at little humble shoots which have the strength to poke through pavements and roads. Seeds can lay dormant underground for years.

I would love to see it! All the species and the beauty returned back to this earth. How long do you think it would take for weeds, plants and wildlife to take over london if the human race?
Depending upon the climatic conditions for the next 50 years in the UK, it would take a series of stages when all ground cover took hold, then followed shrubs and finally trees and ultimately grazers and other mammals. All in all, and including the possible escape of wildlife from Regents Park Zoo, a total of 100 years; for it to be uninhabitable for humans.
judging how quickly weeds grow on waste land within weeks trees will take a lot longer but once the decay of the buildings start maybe in a hundred years it will start to look like the forest in jungle book animals are likley to move in within weeks if there enough food as shelters not going to be a problem
You will wonder but it will take more than 1000s of years in some parts of London. You visit Kurukshetra Area in India, where the Mahabharat War was there between Kauravas and Pandavas. Not a single grass leaf is there. So modern day's pollution will make it impossible for nature to prevail.
within 6 months to a year already foxes and badgers in the outskirts and middle of London kestrels etc nesting in high office blocks on the windowsills probably less than 6 months
There was a show on the history channel that asked that question. Within months of humans disappearance, animals and plants will already be taking over London.
pretty quick on the outskirts, but you have a job finding any greenery in central london, it would take a long time and probably mostly brambles and ivy would creep through
Not long seeing as how crappily roads and pavements are built...

if you have a patio you will know how quick weeds grow,
not long (you'd be surprised at how many weeds, plants and wildlife are already thriving there)
Just watch the channel 4 documentary on Monday night for the answer..

What if WWE didn't lose that Lawsuit to the World Wildlife Fund?

It would basically still be the same, as the lawsuit affected the name of the promotion. The roster and creative team weren't affected by this and so the storyliners would still be booking the matches, feuds, gimmicks and promos. While Vince would still be hiring the new talent for the rosters and overseeing the promotion. The name was only affected, so therefore, the wrestling and the quality of the storylines and rivalries etc wouldn't be affected by the lawsuit. What if WWE didn't lose that Lawsuit to the World Wildlife Fund?
to me wwe sounds wimpy. they should have changed it to wwfu. it would have been a slap n the face to the world wildlife fund and that was around the time of them getting wcw. world wrestling federation unitedWhat if WWE didn't lose that Lawsuit to the World Wildlife Fund?
It'd still be called the WWF

And no, the name of the company wouldn't make it any better or any worse. It'd be the same as it is today.
they'd maintain the name, ';WWF';.. %26amp; probably they'd still be wrestling-oriented than entertainment-fixated..
They wouldn't have had their awesome ';Get the F out'; marketing campaign.
Still, nobody would care about wrestling.
It would still be the WWF.
will then it would have stayed wwf

ive liked animals since i was a lil kid and ive seen so many animals get injured and die because there is noone to nurse them back to health:(...and i would like to raise the injured or orphined wildlife legally so that i could raise them and release them back into the wild

so if u know of any info on this please help me because i keep finding wildlife that needs help but there is nothing i can do unless i can get a license and do so legallyDoes anyone know where i can take classes to get a licence to raise injured or orphaned wildlife?i live in MI?
Contact the DNR and they can get you on the right track and might even have some intern programs you could participate in, we love animals also. Good luck with your future in animal health pursuitDoes anyone know where i can take classes to get a licence to raise injured or orphaned wildlife?i live in MI?
check with your local DNR office -- they can either give

you the info or put you on the right track
I would contact a wildlife rehabilitator in the phone book and ask. I know you have to take required classes and continue taking classes as they come up to keep your license active.

There is wildlife you can legally take care of without a license but that varies state to state. Any animal that is at risk for rabies however requires a license.
For most rehabilitators, a college degree in biology or ecology is recommended.

The curriculum should include: ornithology, mammalogy, animal behavior, ecology, related wildlife/environmental subjects.

Wildlife rehabilitators include: veterinarians, veterinary technicians, biologists, educators, and people from other diverse backgrounds.

A college degree is not required to become a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, but a biology-related degree provides a number of advantages:

    - knowledge essential for quality hands-on animal care

    - understanding of wildlife in relation to humans and the environment

Taronga Zoo or Sydney Wildlife World?

I will be in Sydney this spring. I want to visit either the Taronga Zoo or Sydney Wildlife World. I don't have time to visit both. Which one do you recommend?Taronga Zoo or Sydney Wildlife World?
Wildlife World is great but Taronga is so unique with its position on the hill overlooking the harbour ... it's worth going just for the ride up in the cable car (do that, don't walk or take the bus - it's included in the ticket price), and to see the view the giraffes have from their enclosure. It is one of the world's truly amazing zoos (and I've visited a lot in my time - some are horrendous and heartbreaking, I have to add). Don't miss the sea-lion show if it's on when you're there.

Wildlife World is also worth a look as you get closer to the Aussie animals, but if you have to choose it's just got to be Taronga.Taronga Zoo or Sydney Wildlife World?
Taronga Zoo is definitely the place to be!!!! i suggest the meerkats!!!

Should we drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge?

This is a complex question. On the one hand, it is good for the United States to become less dependent on foreign oil, both economically and politically. On the other hand, we know we do not have enough fossil fuels within the US's borders to become totally independent. From another perspective, we know that there is some oil locked up in ANWR. Then again, the USGS's own estimates are that there is only 6 months to a few years worth of oil there and it will take approximately 10 years to get that oil to market. Is the possible loss of one of the last remaining arctic preserves worth the benefit of the oil that we will get out of the area?Should we drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge?
Not just no, but Hell No!!! There isn't all that much oil there to begin with and after all that digging to install pipelines and so on think what that will do to the environment. And hopefully, within 10 years, now that we have a Democratic Congress which isn't in the pocket of Big Oil, maybe we can find some alternative fuel sources - this is one of the goals of the Democrats.....to encourage and promote alternative sources of fuel. Allowing the drilling there was just for Bush and Cheney's buddies so they could make more money - like the oil companies don't make enough money.Should we drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge?
No, the $450,000,000,000 we've spent on the Iraq invasion/occupation would be enough to fund alternative-renewable energy development.
I heard that we shut down a big pipeline in the Arctic sometime ago, or maybe Alaska. The reason being environmentalist whackos, supposably it was affecting the population of a certain species, maybe caribou? The truth it was actually helping them, there was more of their young surviving, because the pipeline created a little bit of warmth from the friction of the oil moving. I love people like them.
Did you know ANWR is biger than the stat of Main. Just how much harm can a few wells in a place that big.

    So I wouls say yes.
    no, never.
    NO NO NO1

Theres an injured squirrel in my yard should i trap it and take it to the wildlife rehabilitation center?

its limping and its tall isnt furry, the tails all skinny and it can run away from me but its mostly just laying in my old treehouseTheres an injured squirrel in my yard should i trap it and take it to the wildlife rehabilitation center?
YES!Theres an injured squirrel in my yard should i trap it and take it to the wildlife rehabilitation center?
I, personally, would end up taking it in and healing it but that is not the best option for some and is illegal. Unless you have a permit. Call a wildlife rehabiliator or search for a local wildlife rescue and take them there. You would have to catch them and that isn't always easy. If its still moving around well try to feed him with a live trap to catch him. Place the food into it and he will crawl in and the cage will close in and lock him in.

If you have any other questions or need farther help email me. Taylor_Metal16
IS it rabbid? If it is then hit it with a shovel and put it out of it's missery (srry it sounds SO mean i know....I mean i could NEVER do that...but hats the best way). If you think that it isnt rabbid then call then grab a blanet iand wrap the squirrel up in it and take it the the rehabilitation center. Good Luck!
Squirrels are counted as pests, they will most likely have to put it to sleep however it may be for the best is it has broken a leg. I can't see how much pain it is in so your decision is best:)

I want a job as a parkranger will my mental illness keep me from getting a job for the CO div of wildlife?

8 years ago i was honorably retired from the US Army because of PT SD and schizophrenia im 100 percent service connected but i want to be a park ranger for the colorado division of wildlife can my illness prevent me from my dream jobI want a job as a parkranger will my mental illness keep me from getting a job for the CO div of wildlife?
I think the only way to get the correct answer is to call the wildlife division and ask for an application. Fill it out and be entirely honest about everything, including what meds you are on.

You will know one way or the other. And, by the way, sweetheart, it's always good to have one or two backup dreams!

Good luck to you.I want a job as a parkranger will my mental illness keep me from getting a job for the CO div of wildlife?
Yes, you can be denied of your dream job due to your mental illness. It depends solely on department policies on accepting people with a prior mental condition.

In some cases, they won't ask you nor attempt to find out if you do. It's probably best to keep quiet unless they ask you about it.
The americans with disabilities act should protect you, but a couple issues would be that you may not be able to take a job in enforcement, because in some states, by having a mental illness, you lose your firearms rights (not in Colorado, I don't think). This is well beyond the Brady Bill I am talking - in Texas, just HAVING THE DIAGNOSIS of schizophrenia or bipolar nixes you (I have bipolar). If you are on meds that make you really tired, like a lot of the antipsychotics do, that may limit your driving. Do you have a social worker or are you eligible for vocational benefits? Usually schizophrenia is extremely disabling, so you might have been misdiagnosed there. Especially suspect that if you are black - many black people with bipolar get misdiagnosed with schizophrenia. A lot of folks with bipolar can do pretty good on the job, aren't sick all the time (I'm disabled with it).

Good luck - go to NAMI.org and find your local office on their website and call them up and find someone good to talk to about this.
Nothing can stop you from your dream job. You just have to make sure you stay on your medication, going to therapy, etc. enough to make sure you stay fit for the job. If your okay now, I would look foward to the future and rnot the past. Go for it.

What kind of poster can be made on ';Wildlife Conservation';?

Please give some suggestionsWhat kind of poster can be made on ';Wildlife Conservation';?
    Make a tri fold.

1st fold----explain what is wildlife conservation. what does it mean? what's going on that is causing the need for it (like over hunting, climate change, etc.)

2nd----explain about animals that are being effected by anything and why they would be considered animals that need ';wildlife conservation';. pick like three to five and write short descriptions about what is going on. put pictures and stuff, and make it organized.

3rd------put some easy ideas on what an average student can do to help. for example, adopt an animals at worldwildlife.org

GOOD LUCK!What kind of poster can be made on ';Wildlife Conservation';?
For a poster on ';Wildlife COnservation'; you should put a background of land in your place (like low ground, or high ground). You should then put pictures of animals in your place that are being harmed, maybe like the Pigeons, and other birds. Put the animal pictures to the side of the poster. Next to each one put a real fact about it. You should also put a border of paper leaves or vines, something. With the background you should put rain or a sun. In the middle of the poster put a fact that is important that wil convince readers like'; If we did not have enough animals something would change, but bad'; in big bold, only if it is to convince.

  • What are the wildlife conservation efforts in SAARC countries and wat is the success met?

    These countries are working to:

    Reduce poaching

    Reduce illegal trade and consumption

Reduce pollution and emissions of greenhouse gases

Raising awareness and training zoologists in veterinary techniques and procedures for large animals such as big cats

    Educating zoologists about handling techniques

    Developing multiple well-protected wildlife sanctuaries

Develop enforcement committees for each of these

    Results:

According to many of the sites, the results aren't as great as everyone expected. For example, traps, illegal logging and hunting in preservation areas threatens preservation efforts. The continued demand for large cat pelts motivates more people to ignore preservation effors. Many of these countries have high deforestation rates, which destroys wildlife habitats. What are the wildlife conservation efforts in SAARC countries and wat is the success met?

    badgers, squirrels,

    and very occasionally........otters!
Bloody foxes live under the shed and cause no end of nuisance.

There are plenty of frogs and toads, and we have seen a slow-worm.

Apart from them, we have the usual selection of birds, snails, insects and worms.
Outer London/Kent border. Saw a hedgehog last night, the foxes are a damn nuisance, numerous birds, and we got rid of rats early this year.
bugs, lots and lots of bugs
strangest thing i have seen is green parakeets(no joke loads of em)apparently they have been here since the film africa queen was made at pinewood or elstree and made themselves at home
In my garden not only do I have the usual bugs and ants there are rabbits, quail, and an occasional coyote. Not to say anything about the human wildlife during and after a BBQ.
I have no garden at this time, but the wildlife is here. I have seen within 150 ft of my house.

    deer

    bear

    cougars

    bobcats

    coyotes

    fox

    chipmunks

    red-tail hawks

    rattlesnakes

    bull snakes

    alligator lizards

    fence lizards

    numerous birds

    and insects

    skunks

    raccoons

    opossum

    and so many more
    dorset England

I am lucky, we have a big really wild garden and have seen rabbits, squirrels, deer, frogs and toads, and this year are lucky enough to have badgers. As for birds there are so many - woodpeckers, buzzards and peacocks being the most interesting.

Last year we had a cow visit the patio - but I dont think it was wild !! lol
worms, loads of them. but not much more as i moved into a house with a low maintenance garden that is not wildlife friendly.

used to have more when in the country.

one day i'll be back there. cant wait.
T1ts - blue, great, coal, blackbirds, thrushes, two jays, doves, hedgehogs, rats, bumble bee nest, greenfinches, goldfinches.
Where I live, there's not much wildlife, but there's plenty of introduced feral life, LOL.

    earthworms (two different kinds)

Snails, two kinds including the kind eaten as escargot

    Slugs (three kinds)

Plenty of insects and a few spiders.

';worm'; salamanders, California toads (haven't seen one in years though)

Alligator lizards. Fence lizards. California legless lizards. Gopher snakes.

    Birds - I'm not a birdwatcher, so I don't know what kinds. Mockingbirds and scrubjays and red-tailed hawks and pigeons. Also feral parrots possibly ';red-fronted conures.';

field mice, jackrabbits, coyotes, opossums, squirrels (two species), rats, skunks, feral cats, pocket gophers.
Small deer's, wild boars, foxes, badgers, the odd snake, slow worm, grass snake etc. weasel, and all sorts of birds, I live in Switzerland at around 1500 feet and in a semi rural area that borders on a small forest, so these things are quite often seen, not every day of coarse.
We have a load of frogs. and a load of ants. and some little bugs. worms, centipedes and all the usual creepy crawlies. Every now and then we get various birds eating the bugs.
Hedgehogs and we had a fox on our shed roof once!
    Rabbits, pheasants, owls, bees,

a friendly robin, lots of wild birds in fact...

lots of insects too many to mention

    oh and bats too
lots of birds- blackbirds, thrushes, magpies, ravens, collared doves and wood pigeon. I saw a Jay there, once.

We also get squirrels and hedgehogs. Last year we had a vixen, and she used to take food from our hands, and even used to come into the kitchen, to be fed. She wasn't seen for a few weeks, then when she turned up again, she had 2 babies with her.

Have you ever thought of protecting wildlife from extinction?

Have you ever thought of protecting wildlife from extinction?Have you ever thought of protecting wildlife from extinction?
Yes. In the '70's, I was involved in the save the whales campaign. We were successful. Commercial whaling is now illegal internationally, although Japan and Russia still take some for 'scientific' purposes. But at least they are now on the increase!Have you ever thought of protecting wildlife from extinction?
Have thought about it and done something about preventing it. Have You?
    Yes.
    yes. i would love to.
Not only thought about it, I've worked doing it - river surveys and water quality testing for endangered fish, a radiio transmitter survey to follow feeding and roosting habits of endangered bats, and searches and mapping of locations for endangered plants, among other projects.
I was a member of Greenpeace. I attended a fund raiser thing at a yacht club. As I sat amongst the man and women with leather shoes, silk fabrics or some textile that is basically plastic, drinking ice filled scotch I meandered out to the parking lot to have a cigar.

A wale may have been 'saved', but three were killed. The tables and chairs that we sat on were from clear cutting of Amazon Rain Forrest. The perfume a lady put on from the aerosol can did not smell good to me.

six billion peoples this decade, twelve billion in another tenm years,do the math.

I did, and it does not save anything.
Yes, as a wildlife biologist I manage endangered and declining species on a regular basis.
Yes. I always put horny toads back where I found them so they can eat the ants.
yes I think that this would be a great project for anyone.

I think the best thing you can do is find where the greatest need is. Without it, the fund raising part will be extremely difficult.

  • Do you think we should drill for oil in the Alaskan wildlife refuge?

The thing that Republicans don’t bother to tell people when there drooling over drilling in the wildlife refuge is that it estimated to have a little over a years supply of oil in it. So in my opinion the cost isn’t worth the gain. The refuge has a estimated 1.9 billion barrels of oil and the U.S. consumes 19.6 million barrels of oil a DAY.Do you think we should drill for oil in the Alaskan wildlife refuge?
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is home to some of the most diverse and spectacular wildlife in the arctic. The Refuge's rich pageant of wildlife includes 36 fish species, 36 land mammals, nine marine mammals, and more than 160 migratory and resident bird species. If we drill there, the different species that are already there will be subjected to dangerous conditions and therefore will be on the verge of extinction…if they are not already. If should be left alone.Do you think we should drill for oil in the Alaskan wildlife refuge?
no. I agree with you. They just want to help their buddies make more money on federal land and have the tax payers pay for the ';exploration'; and then exploit those same tax payers by charging $3 a gallon (with record breaking profits). Additionally, they don't have to pay any kind of sur tax or usage tax for using OUR federal lands for personal profit.

Not to mention that it would ruin the habitat for 100's of species.
No there is plenty of oil in Los Angelas and off shore in CA.

Alaska is to far away. We could level Watts and pump oil from South Central LA.

    Go big Red Go
It should be done as a temporary solution to slow the problem but alternative fuels need to be developed for the long term solution.
Yes! My name is George Bush and I love to drill anywhere and anytime.

    No.
No. we should plant it in hemp and produce ethanol, year after year after year.

And sadly, your estimate may be off, I've seen figures over 20 Million barrels a day.

FYI: I said hemp instead of corn because one acre of hemp will produce the same amount of ethanol as 10 acres of corn. Ever ask the question, what % of this country is going to have to become farm land in order to feed that 20 MM B/d hunger? Try 50+%
Sure we should go ahead and drill, lord knows that all those SUV drivers with 1 or 2 people in the car need the fuel. Oh by the way there might be oil in the Grand Canyon and maybe even under Half Dome in Yosemite too.
Where did you get your ';facts';?. The USGS estimates that 10.4 billion barrels are recoverable from ANWR alone. There's also a nearby area that has about the same amount, that was OK'd for drilling by Congress about 80 years ago, that has never been touched. (Your number on daily consumption is about right). This information is readily available on Yahoo.

Let's round the numbers to 20 billion barrels recoverable versus 20 million barrels daily usage. That's 1000 days, or a 3 year supply if we don't use oil from any other source. Now ';in your opinion the cost isn't worth the gain';. Are you a professional and do you really have ANY IDEA AT ALL of the cost or the benefit?
    Drill
They are drilling all over Utah, Wy and Co right now. Bush has opened all federal land to be drilled !! Do some reading on where they are drilling right now in the USA!!!!! From Bad to Worse - Colorado BLM to Hold the Largest Lease Sale in State History

BLM recently announced that on Tuesday, May 11 th the state office will hold the largest oil %26amp; gas lease sale in Colorado history, exceeding last quarter's record-setting sale by over 27,000 acres or approximately 43 square miles. Up for grabs is 196,735 acres of national public land in 172 parcels (the February 2006 sale included 169,602 acres in 157 parcels). Northwest Colorado will be hardest hit by the sale, in which 118,000 acres are slated for sale in Moffat County alone.More information, including maps showing leases in Forest Service roadless areas, photos of some of the threatened Forest Service roadless areas, is available at http://www.roadless.net/ - click on “ Oil %26amp; Gas Leases Threaten Roadless Areas ” near the upper right portion of the page. Read This !!!
YES!!! And also under the Los Angeles City Hall and the Gulf of Mexico and in your back yard.
    i don't think it's worth it
so what you are saying is that one source, domesticically, would account for a ten percent decline in imports of crude? And you think that is not worth it?

    Let us see.....

65$ a barrell, 1,900,000,000 barrels, translates to almost 130,000,000,000 dollars, and you call that insignificant?

I would love to have yor check-book.
Bush will probably drill. He normally screws up.
No - I think we should find a better way to run our lives. Oil bites.
No but I think someone should shove some oil up george bush's @$$ Ok so maybee that wasnt very nice but you get the point.
We should drill werever we have to for a resource that is essential to our economy. Even if we convert all of our cars to hydrogen or electric or something else, we will still need massive amounts of oil. Many industries, especially the plastics and petrochemical, require oil.

What is the risk to a couple of carribou when compared to the risk of a near total economic collapse and a 30s like depression. People seriously need to get their priorities straight.
Check your facts...I don't believe that is right, and estimates have been more than 15 years, not one year....iand by your stats, that would be about 3 months....when you argue, you ought to get everything right, even your story and figures right....hell, you can't even argue this point right....one year...HA!!!!
A Wildlife refuge should not be used to drill for oil. Those types of places are there for a reason, to save life, not for big oil companies to come in and kill off the animals and deplete a natural resource. To make a short answer long, NO, They should not drill in that type of an area.
I am in favor of getting our oil anywhere but the mid East, and converting to something else to power our society.
yes and your #s are wrong in the senate proposal its 10.4 Billion barrels and the proposal is to open for drilling and EXPLORATION who knows what the final #s will be perhaps you are quoting the yearly production which is close to your #

Which university (in the U.S.) has the most hands-on wildlife ecology/biology classes?

I've just finished my first year of college and am quite bored with sitting around in lecture halls. I want to go into wildlife ecology of some sort, and I want to be able to be outside experiencing it as as possible when I learn. I've tried looking around different university websites, but their course descriptions don't say much at all, and nothing has come up about hands-on experience in everyday classes.

Does anyone know any myths or legends about deer hunting or wildlife in general?

I've heard the myth about shooting the White Deer will bring bad luck, but was hoping to find more myths/legends about deer, wildlife in general, hunting and/or trapping. Maybe there are family stories you have or have heard from freinds or you know where on the Net I could them.Does anyone know any myths or legends about deer hunting or wildlife in general?
Never heard of it being bad luck to shoot a white deer. I know whenever I hear an Owl before daylight it has been a good day . I heard myth hearing or seeing an owl during day is bad luck. And shooting a hawk is bad luck.

You will probably find most of your legends about animals on the net under North American Indian animal legends.

I saw a solid white (Albino Crow ) once and have seen piebald deer (a color variation) in the mountains of NC.Does anyone know any myths or legends about deer hunting or wildlife in general?
One myth that I do know is that wolves are dangerous animals towards man. This is pure myth. If you reserach it you will find very, very few documented cases where a wolf attacked a human. If it did it was cornered, or the pack was in danger, or in one recent case it was a due to a hunters stupidity...

Legend has it that Romulis and Remus, two twin boys were partially raised by a wolf. They are the legendary founders of Rome.
one i know is true is... if the moon is full deer will be feeding at about 10-2 in the day and in the middle of the night
yeah that sounds to me like a liberal myth. i do know a myth about non-typical antlers an a buck, its said that if the buck has an injury on one side of its body then the antler on that side becomes non-typical, a local indian told me this, he says that when you skin them out you will find old scars on the side/sides that are non-typ
If you dream about a black bear death is near. Alaska native superstition. Still, all my bear dreams have been about brown bears.

Also , seeing a white raven means the same thing. But I have seen one once and no one I knew died.
Indian myth, when the screech owl is heard , death is near for someone close to you. I have also heard the white deer myth.

Why is there more wildlife in hills?

For the most part a lot of hills would seem to have the same vegetation and stuff as if they were flat. So why does there seem to be so much more wildlife in the hills? Like I am specifically talking about Southern Calif like some of the hills in Orange County and LaWhy is there more wildlife in hills?
One obvious reason is that the valleys experience much higher development pressure. So there is a high degree of habitat loss and habitat fragmentation in these areas. The hills may act as a refuge for animals....In areas where there is not a ton of development in the valleys, the lack of species richness can be partially explained by the homogeneity of habitat. There may be open land, with ample vegetation, but it is more homogeneous than the hills, for example, a large stand of oaks....The hills provide a greater amount of microhabitat: altitudinal gradient, temperature gradient, rocky outcroppings, north and southward facing slopes.....The greater amount of physical differences leads to a higher plant/fungi/invertebrate/ vertebrate diversity.....Overall, this is a generaliztion, there are certainly cases where the lowlands would have higher biodiversity (in a large wetland for instance).....And there is also always the chance that you simply pay more atention to wildlife when you are strolling through the hills, than when you are in the suburbs. Where many species (raccoons, skunks, house sparrows, etc.) have taken advantage of suburban life. Why is there more wildlife in hills?
because the most retarded, selfish animal on the planet, the human thinks they control everything so the build giant cities, that push animals that were their first farther and farther away.
Safer from most natural disasters maybe? Getting away from the humans? More hiding spots for predators and hiding spots for prey?
theres more wildlife there cause man hasnt invaded their territory and killed them off..

im from the mountains of wva and there are all kinds of beautiful animals living there..
    There are fewer humans.

  • What are the job hours and working conditions for a wildlife rehabilitator?

i've known quite a few wildlife rehabilitators and every one has been a volunteer. In other words, they work for nothing and their working conditions are whatever they're prepared to work. What are the job hours and working conditions for a wildlife rehabilitator?
My wife and I are 'wildlife rehabilitators', now based in Tropical North Queensland for the last 2 years, but previously in South East Qld (Brisbane) for 15 years. Wildlife rehabilitation of orphaned %26amp; injured wildlife is voluntary, in your own spare time. You must either be a member of a registered organisation or obtain your own permit from the Environmental Protection Agency. There is minimal government support, all expenses are out of your own pocket (vet fees, feeding, cages/accommodation etc), although most organisations provide support by way of training and discounted equipment, food etc.

The only paid positions would be with various wildlife zoos (Australia Zoo for example), or perhaps with the RSPCA (privately funded) or NPWS (Govt-based National Parks %26amp; Wildlife Service).

Are there any jobs available for teens that deal with wildlife, nature, etc?

I'm 17 yrs old and I need a job.I have a passion for things like nature, wildlife, etc and thought I should search for jobs in that field. So are there any jobs like that for someone like me who doesn't have a degree? Also,I need one that pays. Not a load of money but some...and I live in Nashville,TN.Are there any jobs available for teens that deal with wildlife, nature, etc?
My first job was working in a green house. It didn't pay all that much but I loved it because it fulfilled my passion. Can I give you advise? Do not let anybody talk you into doing something you don't care much for just because you can make more money. That was my mistake. I took two years of horticulture, and always played with plants and animals since I was a child. I was talked into computers, now I am very unhappy and wish I could start over again studied to be a forest ranger. That could be your goal. Good luck. Are there any jobs available for teens that deal with wildlife, nature, etc?
Do you like kids? If you do there are all sorts of different programs in most major cities for kids, and they always need help. I live in Fort Worth, but I know here on the weekends they have discovery club where kids do nature and science stuff.

Other then that, do you have any state parks near you? State parks always are hiring, although the jobs might not always be hands on, you should check with their HR office.

The same goes with zoos. I know zoos hire teenagers, check with their HR department as well.
