For some reason Canada geese have been getting a bad rep, usually for no actual reason except for people's biases. The eat grass on golf course, crap a lot, which isn't very aesthetic, which is one of the big reason many people don't like them. Then you have others who immediately advocate the health risk the droppings pose, kinda funny when you look at the credential of the people making the claims, not microbiologists or pathologist, instead they often ask a hunter, warden, journalist, etc. we all know that these professions require extensive knowledge about wildlife pathology ... According to canadageese.org the state of New-York made these claims before actually doing any studies, when they completed them their findings were ';Canada geese do not pose a health threat even remotely serious enough to justify their mass destruction'; .
Basically there's a lot of political crap involved in this, some people don't like geese, some people like shooting geese, and some people want to be elected... hence various misinformation campaigns. I'm not sure about the current ';population control campaign'; but it's probably more to please people then actual ecological reasons.
Anyways you can read a lot on the various issues concerning the geese on http://www.canadageese.org/coalition.htm鈥?/a>

Wow! That's pretty extreme. Last time I heard, even tho their numbers are huge, geese were still federally protected. Years ago I used to work in an office building, and a pair of geese nested right in the bushes by the main entrance. They were very aggressive when anyone would approach the area, and would actually chase people thru the parking lot. Finally we called the game warden, and he said there was nothing we could do, not even move the nest, because they are federally protected. So when did that change?
I grew up in a rather woodsy family and no one I know eats GOOSE!
I'm sure the Fish and Game folks have a reason for what they are doing. These geese in that area may be becoming overpopulated! they may be causing another animal to be endangered... they may carry diseases that get int he water and hurt us.
They have to go through all kinds of red tape before they just go out and smash goose eggs. It's not like someone who worked at the FGW woke up and decided not to like geese!
I think it is ridiculous!!! Why do humans always think that they have the right to live over other animals?!?! Humans are more overpopulated than any animal!!!!
They aren't smashing the eggs.If they smashed them the geese would just lay more. They shake the eggs which causes the embryo inside to die.The reasoning behind this isn't so much to reduce geese populations everywhere, but rather only in the higher density populations around urban areas.Being geese are migratory and return to the same places each year their numbers become problematic in some urban areas. Some States are requesting permission from the Federal Game and Fish to capture and kill certain numbers of adults. Then donate the meat to local food banks. This is a good idea still it is allot more costly and will have little to do with the amount of returning geese the next year.Shaking the eggs is the most cost efficient as well it can be focused on a particular population of adults. They have increased bag limits for hunters over the past few years trouble is there is a limited amount of hunters and even a more limited amount of land to which they can hunt upon.
