That P80 will certainly zoom out far enough, but it's a tiny sensor and you will not be happy with enlargements. Most people don't take wildlife photos with expectations of making a 4x6 print, either.
The D40 with the 18-55 kit lens and the 70-300 VR lens that Ace recommended will suit you well. Those two lenses will give you almost the same coverage at the P80, but with much better image quality. What is the best type of camera for wildlife photography?

Yes a DSLR with a very long, very expensive telephoto lens is best for wildlife. By wildlife I am referring to a bear in the mountains or something like that. The lenses that are used are extreme telephoto lenses in the 600+ mm range. They typically cost thousands of dollars.
If you are talking about shooting a deer in the woods or squirrels and birds in your back yard an entry level DSLR and a 70-300mm lens would be fine. You can purchase both the camera and the lens for under $1,000. Some cameras to look at would be the
Canon Rebel XTi or XSi
Nikon D40 or D60
Both make several 70-300mm lenses. Choose the one in your price range.
It depends on your level of expertise, but a digital SLR will always be the best and either Canon or Nikon with a good zoom lens is best. Expensive though. Here is a good site www.dpreview.com
