How do environemental pressure groups prevent developments which are detrimental to wildlife?

First, it is necessary to prove that the development will indeed be detrimental to wildlife. It may be possible to force the developer to hire experts to run an environmental impact assessment. Sometimes, the protesting group has to pay for the study. I've worked both ways. Sometimes the problems are so severe, the developer withdraws plans. Sometimes plans can be modified to spare the wildlife. Sometimes the plans go ahead with no change. It's a big gamble, costing thousands of dollars (US) for even a small project.

BTW, if you think that I'm expensive, try hiring a lawyer to fight for you.How do environemental pressure groups prevent developments which are detrimental to wildlife?
We have used the legal system and appealed a planning decision in Court. In one case we took out an injunction to stop illegal works and recieved threats of being bankrupted and all that but the developer withdrew the matter the day before it was going to Court and we sought costs for the late withdrawal and we won. They buy the land. look up the history of Hawk Mountain in Pennsylvania.
